For the first four weeks, water your tree or plant well twice per week. Keep your tree or plant watered but not soaked; damp but not bone dry. Beginning the fifth week, you can water your new tree or plant once a week.
Where to Plant?
When choosing where you're going to plant your tree, shrub, or perennial, consider the specific plant's sun or shade requirements and soil moisture needs.
What Size Hole?
Dig a hole 3x wider than the root ball. In terms of depth, you want your tree or plant to be able to rest in the center of the hole. The root collar should be level with the ground.
Do I Remove the Container?
Yes! Here's how to remove the container. Tilt the tree or plant at a 45-degree angle. Gently tap the sides of your container all the way around to loosen the root ball from the container. You can lay your plant or tree down if necessary (but be careful of the branches!) and slide the tree or plant from the container.
What Do I Do About the Roots?
Gently loosen up the roots with your hand to break up any roots that have begun to circle around when in the container. You can use a rake, box cutter, or gardening tool if you need assistance.
Place Your Plant or Tree!
Put your tree or plant in the middle of the hole you dug. You want the tree or plant to stand straight and for the root collar to match ground level. You can use the soil under the plant or tree to raise or lower it if you need to.
Make the Plant or Tree at Home!
Fill around the root ball with the soil you previously dug out. The soil is important, as it will help hold water and nourish your new plant or tree! The whole first year, your new addition will need more water than normal to help grow its root system. When you water, you can water the circle of soil around the plant.
When Can I Add Mulch?
Right away! We recommend you add 2 or 3 inches of mulch on top of the soil. Once you do that, give your new plant or tree a GOOD watering.
